Veterans Compensation Benefits are awarded to Veterans who have suffered the "onset" of an illness or injury or the "aggravation" of an illness or injury during a time of active duty. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE IN COMBAT TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR THIS BENEFIT! These illnesses and injuries can be either mental or physical in nature. The Veteran is compensated on the degree of the disability and rated between 0% 100%. Therefore the higher the rating decision the higher the amount of compensation awarded to the Veteran.

If you have been diagnosed with an illness that you believe either began in service or was aggravated by service you should file a claim immediately.

Veterans Pension Benefits are different from Compensation Benefits because you are not required to be service connected in order to receive Pension. Pension is based on a "need based" scale and pays up to $1,021 a month for a single veteran. Need based means that any income you receive, whether it's $1 or $10 will be reduced from your monthly Pension amount. So if you receive $1 from another source then your monthly Pension amount would be $1,021 minus $1, which would equal $1,020. Because Veterans Pension Benefits is a "need-based" program it may conflict with other benefits.

In to order to be eligible for Pension Benefits you must have been:

    • Discharged from service under conditions other than dishonorable
    • You must have served at least 90 days of active service 1 day of which was during a time of war.
    • Your countable family income must be below a yearly limit set by law.
    • And you are age 65 or older, OR, you are permanently and totally disabled, not due to your own willful misconduct.

I am a veteran, and it has been a battle and a struggle for me to get my compensation.
